5 steps of brushing teeth like at the dentist

Brushing your teeth is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. The brushing should last at least two minutes and be repeated at least twice a day, and ideally after each meal. In order to preserve the gums and tooth enamel, it is also advisable to use fluoride toothpaste without adding water and a soft-bristled toothbrush that is recommended to be changed regularly at most every third month. Once placed in front of the bathroom mirror to control the brushing technique, simply follow the 5 steps that constitute an effective tooth brushing and always clean them in the same order, not to forget.

Brushing the outer surface of the teeth

To begin with, place the toothbrush at the junction between the teeth and gums, and tilt it to form a forty-five degree angle to the teeth. With the brush, you then make a circular motion maintaining a constant pressure, starting from the gum to go to the tooth, and only in this direction, then repeat this gesture two or three times per group of two teeth.

This technique allows to massage the gum and take off the dental plaque and food residues. This is how it cleans the entire outer surface of the teeth of the upper jaw, incisors to the last molars. Once the teeth of the upper jaw are brushed, those of the lower jaw should be cleaned in the same way, but this time by brushing from bottom to top.

Brushing of the inner side of the teeth

Using the same technique as for the outer side, we brush the inner side of the teeth, palate side for the top, and side tongue for the bottom. In order to more easily clean the upper and lower incisors, the brush should be positioned vertically and the movement should go back and forth and from the inside to the outside.

Brushing the chewing faces

Positioning the brush vertically and brushing chewing faces, also called occlusal faces, with small circular movements back and forth and a rotational movement on the last tooth. This gesture should be repeated at least ten times per side, on both the upper and lower teeth.

The passage of an interdental brush or dental floss

A final visual inspection can detect areas where plaque deposits persist and finish. And since the bristles of the toothbrush do not remove the food residues between the teeth and plaque, it is advisable to clean the interdental spaces using interdental brushes or dental floss.

Brushing the palate and tongue

As the palate and tongue also carry germs, it is also imperative to clean them for about a minute after brushing their teeth. To do this, it is possible to use the bristles of the toothbrush or a special brush and then rinse well the mouth, either with water or with a dental solution. This action helps to eliminate food residues and bacteria, but also to fight against bad breath, and to strengthen protection against caries and periodontal disease.

It is recommended to wash your teeth at least twice a day to maintain good dental hygiene. Effective tooth brushing helps to remove plaque, clean interdental spaces and prevent the development of tooth decay.
